The insurance covers different types of benefits depending on where the incident happens. Here's how it works:

Property and home-related coverage

Most home insurance guarantees in your policy, such as coverage for fire, theft, appliance breakdowns or water damage, is only valid if the incident happens within Spain.

  • Example: Your apartment in Madrid suffers water damage: it’s covered.

Personal (civil) liability coverage

Personal liability insurance generally applies to claims arising within the European Union, provided that:

  • The claim is related to your private life (not professional or commercial activities)

  • The claim is handled through Spanish courts. This means even if the incident happens in another EU country, any lawsuit or claim must be handled through the Spanish legal system. For more info, please check this article.

Your policy includes personal liability coverage for accidental damage you cause to others (like a water leak damaging your neighbour’s flat), no matter where in the EU the incident happens.

Legal defence coverage

Legal defence cover may apply to insured events occurring in Spain and other EU countries, depending on the type of claim. As with personal liability, legal proceedings are managed under Spanish law and jurisdiction.

  • If you ever need legal assistance (like a lawyer) for an incident that’s covered by your policy, you’re protected anywhere in the EU.

  • Example: You have a legal issue related to your home while traveling in Germany. Your policy will cover your legal defence costs there.

What is not covered geographically?

  • Incidents occurring outside the European Union are generally not covered.

  • Any risks or situations not linked to the insured home or to private life are excluded.
