Expat health insurance renews automatically. There is nothing you need to do to extend or maintain your coverage as long as you qualify for our expat insurance, other than to pay your premiums on time. Your policy remains active and you are billed on the 1st of each month (if you chose monthly billing) until you cancel, until 5 years from your arrival date in Spain, or until your 75th birthday.
What is the maximum amount of time that I can be covered by expat health insurance?
Expat health insurance has a maximum term of 5 years, and that 5-year period starts on the first day you arrived in Spain, not the date you signed up for the policy.
For example, if you arrived in Spain on January 1, 2020 but took out expat health insurance on June 2, 2021, your coverage can only continue until December 31st, 2024. Once you reach the 5-year limit, your coverage expires and you will need to arrange a different type of health insurance.
Does my expat health insurance renew automatically, and what do I need to do to keep it active?
Yes, your expat health insurance renews automatically each month (if you chose monthly billing) or each year (if you chose annual billing). You do not need to request an extension or reapply to stay insured. Your policy continues as long as your premiums are paid on time, you remain within the 5-year eligibility period, and you are under 75 years of age. You only need to take action if you want to switch or cancel your coverage before those limits are reached.
What information do my insurance documents include?
Your insurance confirmation of coverage includes your chosen start date as a calendar date, and it lists the end date as 5 years from your arrival date in Spain (since our Expat policy can be used for up to 5 years), which satisfies visa authority requirements. This is a document formality, not a contract commitment.
What happens when I reach the 5-year or the 75 age limit?
We will contact you by email a few months before your 5-year limit or your 75th birthday is reached to let you know your coverage is coming to an end and to help you find a suitable alternative.
