How to cancel your expat health insurance in Spain

Learn how to cancel your expat health insurance policy, what legal requirements apply if you're staying in Spain, and what other insurance options you have as a resident of Spain.

You can cancel your expat health insurance at any time through your Feather account, but before you do so, please keep in mind that you're legally required to have health insurance when living in Spain. Except in rare cases, living in Spain without health insurance is illegal.

We can help you determine what your other insurance options are once you become a legal resident of Spain.

How to cancel

You can cancel your Expat Health insurance at any time, but keep in mind that if your policy start date falls on the 1st of the month, you'll need to cancel before the 1st of the following month to avoid being billed and covered for an additional month.

You can cancel your Expat policy easily by:

  • Logging in to your Feather account (simply enter your email address that you used to sign up for your expat policy and then you will be sent a one time password, which you can use to log in);

  • Selecting your expat policy in your account; and

  • Clicking on the cancel button.

What is the deadline to cancel and avoid being charged for the next month?

To avoid being charged for the following month, you must cancel before the 1st of that month. If you cancel on or after the 1st, your policy has already renewed and you will be billed and covered for that full month. Coverage ends at the end of the month in which you cancel.

What happens to my coverage if I'm leaving Spain partway through the month?

If you're planning to leave Spain part way through a month, keep in mind that our policies run on full calendar months, and there is no option to end coverage early mid-month. If you leave on, say, the 15th of the month, your policy will have already renewed on the 1st and you'll be charged for that full month.

The upside is that you can still cancel on a monthly basis with no penalties. Just keep in mind that you need to have a health insurance at all times while residing in Spain.

What are my health insurance options if I'm staying in Spain?

Your health insurance options in Spain depend on your situation, residency status, and whether you need coverage for a visa or residence permit application. The 2 main alternatives to expat health insurance are traditional private health insurance and public healthcare through Social Security (Seguridad Social).

  • Traditional private health insurance offers broad coverage, including fast access to private clinics and specialists, with no maximum policy length. It's best suited for people who have already been living in Spain for several years and hold a NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero).

  • Public healthcare (Seguridad Social) is free if you're employed or self-employed and contributing to Spain's Social Security system. It covers primary care, specialist visits, emergency care, hospitalization, maternity services, vaccinations, and mental health care. Public healthcare is comprehensive, but non-urgent appointments can involve longer wait times.
