When navigating through health insurance policies, you may have encountered coverage points relating to routine check ups and what this exactly means might not always be very clear, so let's clarify this for you!
What is a routine check up?
A routine check up pertains specifically to preventative care, this means a medical appointment that is undertaken for purely preventative measures and no issues/symptoms are present.
For example: If you go for a yearly dental check up where you don't have any symptoms but are going to get assessed by your dentist as a preventative care measure, this would be considered a routine check up.
What isn't a routine check up?
If you are visiting a medical professional for a specific issue or symptom then this would not be considered a routine check up.
For example: If you developed a pain in your elbow and you wanted to go to a doctor to assess the pain, this would be not be considered a routine check up as there is a presenting complaint that you are visiting the doctor for.
Are routine check ups covered in my health insurance plan?
In general, routine check ups and any conditions that might be discovered as a result of a routine check up are not covered.
However, as an exception, if you become pregnant after your expat health insurance policy starts, then the costs of routine prenatal examinations will be covered after you have been on the plan for at least 6 months.
