Expat health insurance doesn't come with a physical or digital healthcare card, as you don't need one. You visit any accredited doctor or specialist as a self-paying or privately insured patient, pay upfront, and submit your invoices and receipts through your Feather account to be reimbursed. Coverage applies in Spain and for temporary trips across the EU and Schengen Area, with home country trips covered after 12 months of continuous coverage.

Do I receive a physical insurance card after signing up for expat health insurance?

No, expat health insurance doesn't include a physical or digital healthcare card, and you don't need one. Unlike public health insurance, expat health insurance works on a reimbursement model, so there's no card required to access care. You can download a digital insurance card from your Feather account, which you can use to show proof of coverage if needed.

How do I visit a doctor or specialist using my expat health insurance?

You can visit any accredited doctor, dentist, or specialist as a self-paying or privately insured patient ; there's no restricted network to worry about. You pay for the appointment upfront (or arrange a payment plan if the bill is high), then submit your invoices and receipts through your Feather account to be reimbursed.

How do I find a doctor that accepts expat health insurance?

We are not limited to a specific network, so you're free to visit any accredited medical provider. Services like Topdoctors and Doctorolia can help you find suitable doctors and specialists in your area.

How do I submit a reimbursement claim for medical expenses?

To get reimbursed, pay your medical invoice upfront ; in full or via a payment plan if one is available. Then submit your invoices, receipts, and any prescriptions through the claims section of your Feather account. Step-by-step guidance is available in our claims support section.

Where is my expat health insurance coverage valid?

Your expat health insurance covers medical care in Spain and temporary trips abroad, with a few conditions depending on your destination and how long you've held the policy:

  • Spain: You're fully covered as your main country of residence.

  • EU, Schengen Area, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and Vatican City: Coverage applies for temporary trips, as long as your primary residence remains in Spain.

  • Your home country: Coverage extends to your home country once your policy has been active for at least 12 months. The maximum is 6 weeks total per insured year. Home country trips are not covered before the 12-month mark.
