Changing the start date of your expat health insurance policy

Written by Reyes

If your visa appointment is delayed or your travel plans change, you may need to adjust your expat health insurance start date. Here are the steps based on whether your policy has started or not.

How can I change the start date of my expat health insurance before the policy begins?

If your policy has not started yet, you can update the start date by following these steps:

  1. Sign in to your Feather account.

  2. Purchase a new expat health insurance policy with your preferred start date (click on "Get covered" here).

  3. In your account section, cancel your original expat health insurance policy by selecting "I have another health insurance" as the cancellation reason.

Your original policy is automatically refunded once it is canceled, though the refund may take a few days to appear in your account. We recommend updating the start date before your policy begins, as this is the simplest method.

How can I change the start date if my expat health insurance has already started?

If your coverage started within the past 4 weeks, follow these steps so we can change the start date and refund the original policy:

  1. Purchase a new expat health insurance policy with your updated start date.

  2. Contact us and provide the new policy number, asking us to cancel the original policy.

  3. Do not cancel the original policy yourself, as doing so affects our ability to issue a refund.

We will then cancel the original policy and issue a refund, provided no claims have been made on it.

What happens if my expat health insurance has started and I do not want to purchase a new policy?

If your policy has already begun and the withdrawal period has passed, a minimum one-month term applies for all policies paid monthly.

For valid reasons to cancel a policy without signing up for a new one, please read our dedicated FAQ.

For this reason, we strongly recommend purchasing a new policy with the correct start date before your current policy starts.
